Review: Sunuva swimwear and girls beachwear

I have moments of being jealous of my daughter. Not in any deep psychological way, but just the fact that I occasionally wish the clothes I bought myself were quite as fun as some of the ones I buy her.

Having upgraded my own swimwear from a blue patterned swimsuit to a plain blue swimsuit (in a different shade of blue), it really can’t compete with her new beachwear from the Sunuva swimwear range.

We first reviewed Sunuva on our trip last year to Antigua and loved the designs, so when we were asked to review some products from the new Sunuva girls’ collection for our stay at Beaches resort in Providenciales, the only question was which ones to choose?

Because with around a dozen different designs, and a variety of products from swimwear to accessories in each, that can take longer than you’d think. So I decided on a balance of one old favourite and one new, which I suspected would be a big hit.

We’ve acquired quite a collection of rash vests over the years: they’re fantastic for younger kids thanks to the UPF50+ protection, doubling up as lightweight tops to protect her skin when we’re travelling somewhere sunny like the Caribbean or our trip earlier this year to Burma.

The longer sleeves mean that when we got a few cloudy days by the beach in California too, they covered up more than a basic T-shirt too.

And while there’s an increasing number of brands bringing out these great protective rash vests, the design has always set Sunuva apart for me – little touches like buttons on the sleeves of the tops, contrasting trims plus pockets on the swim shorts, not to mention the eye-catching colours and prints.

This year was no different. After spotting the neon pineapple Sunuva swimwear range, I was sold.

Bright fun colours (and not pink, hurrah!), a fabulously striking picture on the pineapple rash vest and matching pineappley swim shorts, all fast drying so Minnie could wear them out and about and then head straight into the sea if we wanted.

Can also be accessorised by giant furry characters from Sesame Street if you visit Beaches Resort like we did – for matching orangey shades, try Zoe – and an inflatable frog ring for the swimming pool…

But what else to choose? I was tempted by the kaftans and some of the fun accessories… but for sheer practicality, I kept coming back to the towelling onesies.

An all-in-one playsuit/sunsuit was one of my essentials when Minnie was a baby, and while we skipped any kind of onesie during the potty training months (when something that could be whipped off was more essential), I figured this would be great to throw on on top of wet swimming clothes or change her into straight out of the pool.

Soft, warming after a dip, easy to throw on to even a slightly damp small girl, it was just as useful as I’d hoped and was the usual easily washable high quality.

Which is fortunate, as it got dunked into a frozen strawberry drink on day one. There’s even a helpful hood against the sun, even if Minnie’s favourite cat hat normally took preference.

From Minnie’s point of view, it was a lovely minty green colour (technically aqua) and even more important, had two dangly white pompoms on the zip resulting in a request to let her wear it pretty much every day.

Cute, practical and provides extra snuggly cuddles? Like the rest of the Sunuva swimwear range, I wasn’t arguing…
