Reviewed: Gro To Bed Toddler bedding

Every now and then, sitting in the armchair at the foot of my daughter’s bed, I wonder how many hours of my life have been spent there. From night feeds to encouraging her to nap by my sheer presence to soothing her back to sleep when she’s woken.

Then I decide this is probably a route it’s best not to go down – especially after our recent broken nights. And with a nightlight helping her doze off more easily, we’ve taken the next step… removing the side of her cot bed to turn it into a ‘proper’ toddler bed.

With as much chance of her being completely unfazed as of her falling out of bed/deciding to play not sleep, I decided to take no risks and that even the bedclothes should be on my side, courtesy of a handy little innovation from Gro.

We’ve been using the Grobags since she came out of swaddle blankets, and I love the clever designs in the range such as the travel version.

And the Gro To Bed bedding struck me as another simple solution to the problem of taking an enormously wriggly toddler and getting them to use a pillow and duvet, with minimal disruption all round.

Gro to bed review – how does it work?

How it works? There’s a fitted cotbed sheet which has a zip-on duvet cover and an integral pillowcase, so all you have to do is slip in the duvet and pillow itself. You can also buy extra sheets.

The zips stretch part-way from the top of the duvet to the bottom, enough stop a toddler rolling over and onto the floor. Or at least to slow them down.

Thankfully we have a standard sized cotbed, and it fitted perfectly with the extra band of elastic holding everything even more securely in place.

Our standard cotbed duvet and pillow also went in happily, and as it’s Gro, it goes without saying that it’s lovely quality and cute designs – as Jolly Jungle was temporarily unavailable, we’d gone for All Aboard Adventure which seemed apt.

More importantly, it worked! Who knows if a standard duvet would have done the trick, but as she wriggled her way out on the first two nights, I suspect an unattached pillow would have gone flying at least.

It wasn’t until about 10 days in, having worked out she could undo the zips herself, that she’d managed to fall half-way out of bed. Having since swapped it for a normal set, as the Gro To Bed needed washing, she’s stayed put without a murmur.

Gro to bed review – the verdict

The only downside is the price – at £49.99 for a set, it’s approximately double what a standard sheet, duvet cover and pillow case costs.

Part of my cunning plan was that it would also be fantastic on holiday, especially on a larger single bed. At the moment, if she falls out she’s not far off the floor and it’s carpeted anyway. In a hotel room, it’s more likely to be a standard single with a bit of a drop.

The flaw in my cunning plan (as you may have worked out) is that I’d need a cotbed-sized bed for the sheet to fit. Except the brains at Gro are ahead of me and you can also buy the whole set, including separate sheet in a single bed size.

Familiar bedding, less chance of a rude 3am awakening for both of us, and takes up less room than a baby sleeping bag in my case. A winner at home and away…
