Travel with a newborn: remembering baby travel
There’s nothing like cuddling a newborn to make a flood of memories come back. No, not another newborn of my own, I promise I’d have mentioned it.
But I recently caught up with some good friends and travel companions (including on our Algarve trip) and met their gorgeous second daughter. And realised she wasn’t much younger than Minnie when we went on our first trip to Lanzarote.
Which reminded me of a few of the things I’ve forgotten about travel with a newborn (not to mention daily life with a brand new baby)…
Rocking all day
That gentle swaying bounce from foot to foot that you automatically do when holding a tiny baby. And which you later absentmindedly find yourself doing even when you’re not.
Feed me Seymour
Feeding. And more feeding. How those tiny tummies need topping up so often – not having to travel with food and endless snacks does lighten the hand luggage, but being able to whip out raisins/crackers/rice cakes if they can’t eat properly *right now* is definitely helpful.
And while breastfeeding is amazing if you can, it also brought back the stressful, tearful nightmare we had.
No more weightlifting
I know everyone seems to forget just how tiny babies are (all together: they grow so fast!) but I seem to have forgotten just how light they are too compared to a toddler. No muted grunting and lower back twinges as you pick them up.
The gummy smiles
That moment where that vague unfocused look suddenly zones in on you and you get a huge dribbly grin. For, frankly, not doing much at all. And you melt…
The UNC
The unidentified newborn cry. The one where you’ve checked all the obvious things, they’re still crying and you just Don’t. Know. Why.
Being able to turn your back
The luxury of being able to put them down, look away and know that (a) they’re still where you left them and (b) they haven’t homed in on the single dangerous thing in the surrounding vicinity and managed to cause chaos and carnage in the 10 seconds while your attention was somewhere else…
