Travel resolutions for 2016

Ah, the shiny first day of a new year – nothing like a blank slate to make plans for the next 365 days. As I explained last year, I don’t really make New Year’s resolutions these days – if I am genuinely resolving to do something, I’ll do it whatever the date. Besides, January is the worst time for turning over drastic new leaves.

My 2016 travel resolutions - forget the usual New Year's resolutions of dry January, diets and new exercise regimes, these are my travel goals for the New Year

But travel resolutions? That’s something I can get behind… 2015’s travel resolutions met with mixed success. I certainly managed to travel more as the 12 trips challenge proved, and we’ve seen more of London’s museums and preschool-friendly sights.

I also managed a couple of great weekends away with old friends – one with Minnie too in Yorkshire, another without her in Ljubljana. I don’t feel like I’ve done too well at slowing down and enjoying the moment though, and the collection of photos featuring me is still pretty minimal. So, after asking what you want from the blog, here are my 2016 travel resolutions.

1. Keep up the good work

More exploring London (the British Museum and nearby Coram’s Fields are in my sights) and more weekends away with my friends.

I have been wondering whether I’d do the Take 12 Trips challenge for the third time, but I’ve decided I will to make sure the weeks don’t slip by too quickly. Because there are big changes ahead.

2. Book at least one BIG trip

In September, Minnie starts school. And while the restrictions on absences only come into force when she’s five (after the end of her first school year), I wouldn’t want to pull her out repeatedly when she’s settling in to a new routine.

I also have a landmark birthday coming up (yes, that one) so I’m thinking a major trip somewhere unusual or exotic could be just the way to celebrate. Topping the list so far: Burma and Mauritius.

3. Get my vlogging mojo on

After starting my travel videos last February and building up a whole new set of skills along the way, I’ve really let it slip over the past couple of months before finally catching up with a few overdue videos in December.

I’ve got my sights set on a new 4K camera and hopefully a slicker finish than my smartphone – who knows, I might even appear a bit more (which would solve that ‘no photos of me’ problem too).

4. Build up the City Tripping linky

I have had so much fun launching this linky with Elizabeth from Wandermum and we’ve had some great bloggers linking up. I’m hoping 2016 will see it grow even more. And it might just inspire some more city travel too…

5. Plan a family trip

Between running his own business and a dislike of anywhere too hot, it’s not always easy to persuade my husband to travel with us. And if I’m honest, the trips usually hinge around what *I* want to do anyway.

This year, I’d love us to have a great family trip together so not all Minnie’s memories are just of travelling with me. He loves cars, so I’m wondering about a road trip as Minnie is getting old enough that the right playlist and lots of stops should mean this is back on the cards.

The Pacific Coast is a classic – all I need now is a classic Mustang with room for a car seat…

  1. A trip to Burma would be a fantastic experience! We went to New Zealand before my eldest started school – definitely recommend a big trip as way too expensive when you’re tied to school holiday dates. Happy 2016 travels 🙂

  2. Vlogging is such a great resolution! I’m not confident enough in my video skills for that, so I’ll be living vicariously through you when you start 🙂 Love all your other resolutions too! #MondayEscapes

  3. Lots of great travel resolutions Cathy! Some of our most memorable holidays have been USA road trips, the vast country has so much to offer. Your new linky is very inspiring and I look forward to getting more involved in 2016:)
You definitely need to make the most of Minnie not being in school, I am still in denial about our eldest son and keep checking out holidays in term time!! All the best for 2016

    1. Thanks! I need to get planning, having realised I only really have six months to fit everything in. Eeek! And glad you like the linky, I’m looking forward to seeing your posts this year 🙂
