Reviewed: Superdrug My Little Star baby bath

I sometimes think my daughter is part otter. Or frog. Or water vole. Show her some water (swimming pool, paddling pool, bath) and she literally squeals with excitement, splashing away, dunking her head and chucking rubber ducks around like there might be a prize in it.

And thanks to a helpful tip from friends, we gritted our teeth and made sure she got water on her face and in her eyes from as early as possible, so she now barely flinches when we rinse her hair.

Unless, that is, I forget to use ‘no tears’ shampoo. Having just packed one bottle of body and hair wash on a trip a few months back, bath-time was cut short and it took several days to persuade her back in after I got soap in her eyes.

But despite the efforts of all the baby websites I signed up to during pregnancy, I’ve never been a big fan of Johnson’s products – and have heard similar from other friends.

Then Superdrug launched the My Little Star range earlier this year, including a bath collection, and I’ve been testing four different products – the baby shampoo, baby top-to-toe softwash, baby bath and baby sleeptime bath.

All are mild enough to be suitable for newborns, although they do contains sodium laureth sulfate (a foaming agent that turns up in most bath products but which can irritate sensitive skin) which I’m not wildly keen on for babies.

But unlike other products with SLS, they didn’t dry her skin out at all, and certainly lived up to their promise to be gentle. Even a lavish helping of the softwash in her hair, then rinsed down her face, only got a tolerantly vexed look and left her with even softer fluffy hair than usual.

The 300ml bottles last a while too, even with a nightly bath and a husband who’s generous with products.

My only real quibble is the smell. Despite the gentle formulation, all apart from the baby sleeptime bath smell quite strongly of soap. It’s a classic clean smell that could well appeal to others but just seems a bit overpowering to me (in contrast to the product).

The lavender-coloured baby sleeptime bath, on the other hand, has a very subtle soothing scent which makes it easily my favourite of the four. And it makes for some great bubbles (thanks to the SLS) to play with.

One last word of warning (for toddlers, in particular)… based on Minnie’s reaction after experimentally licking these ever fascinating bubbles, the taste isn’t quite as good!
