Reviewed: (Lindam) Munchkin microwave steriliser bags

I get through half a dozen bottles per day. That’s bottles of formula for Minnie rather than a gin-soaked confession, just to be clear! In my steriliser at home (a steam one, inherited from a friend), that means running it twice which takes care of any dummies and assorted oddities as well. Easy peasy.

It’s not exactly compact to lug around though, and certainly not to try to wedge it into a suitcase. And while I have some Milton cold-water sterilising tablets as a back-up, I always feel they leave everything smelling faintly chemical. Of course, I could rinse it all with boiling water but who has time to faff about doing that?

So step forward microwave sterilising bags, perfect if – like me – you’re staying in self-catering. I’d had the Munchkin microwave steriliser bags recommended [NB previously branded as Lindam microwave steriliser bags], so got hold of a box of three to review in Lanzarote.

Each bag can be used 30 times (up from 20 times when I was testing them), and you can mark off on the side of the bag to keep track. In around 10 days, I used my set around 50 times so as they now come in packs of six, you only need a few for a fortnight’s holiday.

Each is also supposed to sterilise up to two complete bottles – although I struggled to pack in two of the curvy tommee tippee ones I use, so tended to find two uses would sterilise three bottles (including teats and caps plus a dummy or two).

Once you start using them, it’s very easy to get into a routine to you shouldn’t be caught out though.

There are instructions on the side about which way to point the open end of the bottle, but otherwise you measure the right amount of water, make sure the top is sealed, microwave for three minutes and try not to burn your fingers on the steam when you take them out.

The packaging recommends waiting for 10 minutes for just that reason, but I found an expertly wielded tea towel and judicious pouring away of the hot water through the bag’s drain opening speeded things up.

If you don’t want to use the bottles straight away, they will stay sterile in the unopened pouch for up to eight hours as well so you can easily sterilise and leave to let them cool down (as long as you plan ahead!)

They fitted easily into the microwave in our villa too, with instructions on the different timings needed depending on the model you get – so if you’re in self-catering accommodation with a small lower power model, you should still be fine.

And that’s it. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy (as they say). A travel must.
