Reviewed: Huggies Little Swimmers Hygiene Mat

If I could have gone swimming every day during the heatwave, I think I would have. There is literally nothing Minnie likes more than splashing around in the water, so it’s the perfect mood booster when it’s hot and gives a better chance of a good nap in the humidity too.

The first bonus has been the fact it’s stayed warm even after the heat of the day has passed, so there have been fewer cross shivery moments as I’ve tried to towel her down.

The second is being able to whip off her summery dresses in seconds rather than unwrapping many layers before reaching baby. The third has been the Huggies Little Swimmers mat – the new swim mat from Huggies, which they sent me to review. [EDIT: Sadly now out of stock – check out this alternative swimming mat from Splash About]

I’m already a fan of their Little Swimmers swim nappies (they sent me some of those too) which simply rip off at the sides in seconds, and the range’s Hygiene Mat sounded a clever addition to our swimming and travel kit.

The non-slip mat folds up small into its own little waterproof pouch – mine decorated with a penguin for extra cute points, although there’s a choice of frog too – and stashes easily into a bag.

It’s also machine washable, so you can just chuck it in with the towels and cossies afterwards which is useful as it inevitably gets grubby on the ground, then dries very quickly.

The neoprene-style material also means it’s slightly cushioned which is another big advantage – obviously you could use an ordinary change mat but they tend to be fairly thin, not great if you’re trying to do a quick change outdoors as I was in the New Forest. The Huggies mat, on the other hand, did the job nicely.

The only downsides? It’s not huge – but then it’s seems more useful for younger babies and toddlers anyway, and much bigger would start making it unwieldy to carry around. And like every other changing mat ever, I’d love a more padded head section – my usual back-up plan of using the nappy bag worked fine though.

And if you haven’t got round to taking your baby swimming, the launch of the mat is part of a campaign with the Water Babies swim school network, so you’ll get a free session with any two purchases from the range.
