Reviewed – The Body Shop Buriti Baby range

With another trip on the horizon, my thoughts turn to travel size toiletries – I’ve tried a few ranges for Minnie, including Weleda’s Calendula products with the Body Shop baby products on my list too.

So after a few friends recommended The Body Shop’s Buriti Baby range, so I was interested to see what it was like. [EDIT: Now discontinued – check out the Child’s Farm range, which I really recommend as there are no Body Shop baby products currently available]

There’s a Mini Essentials pack, £6, with 50-60ml versions of the body wash, shampoo, massage gel and body butter, all designed to be ultra-gentle, with Amazonian buriti oil to moisturise and protect.

Or you can buy larger versions of the body lotion, body butter and body wash (there used to be full-size shampoo and massage gel as well, although it’s not currently online).

And The Body Shop sent me the body wash, shampoo and massage gel to try. Unlike most baby ranges, it’s a really subtle scent, so lovely for young babies in particular. I know I hated any strong perfume around my newborn.

It really is gentle too – the Simple products I’d been using had left Minnie’s legs a bit dry (although they’re free from perfumes etc, they do have sodium laureth sulphate which can irritate) but switching to this range cleared it right up.

The downsides – the bottles are surprisingly hard to squeeze.

I’ve no doubt the plastic is probably more environmentally friendly but when you’ve got wet hands, plus a wet wriggly baby who’s starting to get tired and ready for bed, wrestling with an unyielding bottle isn’t ideal.

The massage gel also felt oddly sticky and not as hydrating as I wanted, although there are two other moisturisers to choose from.

But the body wash and shampoo are both lovely, and the bottles last ages.

Plus the no-tears formulation really is no tears, which removes one problem when water’s being splashed around by an enthusiastic bath fan.
