Countdown to Gran Canaria – and touch down in the Canary Islands
Phew. The last few days before a trip always seem to be a whirl of last-minute organisation and mild chaos. Needless to say, I haven’t packed yet and have a zillion confirmations to print out but in 48 hours, I’ll be touching down in Gran Canaria.
The pre-trip planning is pretty much done, including plenty of family-friendly activities in Gran Canaria in my sights. The French air traffic controllers have helpfully postponed their extra strike days, and I’m ready to check in for our flight with Norwegian tomorrow, the first time I’ve flown with the airline.
My car parking at Gatwick is sorted, this time through BookFHR.com who helpfully have a 10% discount this month (sign up to their mailing list to get regular new codes), while I’ve also checked where the soft play is at our terminal.
The packing lists have been dug out – my travel essentials, although there’s a few baby products we no longer need, plus those toddler toys for travel, while I’m restocking my first aid kit just in case. I’ve even made a start with the fake tan.
All in all, I can’t wait until we actually arrive at our villa where the welcome pack includes a bottle of wine – Villa Amaranthus booked through the fabulous TotsToTravel, which also means a whole host of paraphernalia, from booster seats to bed guards and bath toys will also be waiting for us.
Now I just have to hope the sun comes out… although the pool will be heated and ready regardless.
Touchdown in Gran Canaria…
Thank God for a welcome pack of essentials waiting for us in the villa. Especially the red wine. Having made our way through the flight with a non-napping toddler, sorted hire cars, wrangled unfamiliar car seats, navigated along a couple of dark twisty roads and found the villa, it was far too late to worry about dinner.
But a ham sandwich and a glass of wine can go a long way… especially when even your first views of Gran Canaria are this lovely.
And especially when you wake up to an equally lovely view…
Day 1 has been a fairly low-key day, restocking the fridge, unpacking and trying to restore a bit of routine for the overtired overexcited two and four-year-olds. My friends’ 10-month-old took it in her stride!
Day 2… we start exploring.

Oh phew! Glad to hear that strike got postponed – horrible to have a big question mark like that hanging over you.
That view from the verandah looks gorgeous – I can totally imagine having breakfast out there!

I know – that one was totally out of our control (along with the weather ) but it’s a big relief. I am definitely looking forward to quite a few al fresco meals – hopefully 🙂
Ah the starting of the fake tan — that must mean you’re getting serious about a holiday! We’re going to La Gomera sometime this year, which I’m really looking forward to. There must be something in the air about these islands this year. Can’t wait to hear about your trip.
Absolutely – and the sudden realisation that I may be about to reflect the sun otherwise 🙂 My sister-in-law went to La Gomera last year and said it was beautiful, very relaxed and unspoiled, although it’s another I haven’t managed to visit yet myself. Perhaps I should aim for the full set?
