Next time in Lanzarote: my Lanzarote wishlist
I started this blog in the stubborn belief that having a baby needn’t stop you travelling – taking into account a few sensible preparations (I have a great excuse for not scaling Everest for a little while). And so far, I seem mostly to have been proved right.
But inevitably, although we managed to pack in most of the things I wanted to do in Lanzarote, there were a few which have had to go onto the ‘next time’ list.
And that’s not even including the Pirate Museum in Teguise which got postponed after we ran out of time [EDIT – here’s what we found when I did make it back]. Or ran out of time during which Minnie would have been happy to go at least.
First, Cueva de los Verdes, or the Green Caves. Formed by a volcanic eruption, there’s a 6km tunnel – plus more that’s underwater – with around 2km open to the public to explore.
The island’s original inhabitants would hide here from pirates (presumably the same ones who appear in the museum) and while they’re not actually green, the colours are apparently fabulous.
But there’s a section where you have to bend double, which pretty much rules out a baby carrier, and I can’t see a buggy making it through the caves. If you do go, it’s just down the road from the Jameos del Agua.
And second, it wasn’t just scuba diving that was off the cards. There are submarine tours from Puerto Calero to see some of the island’s marine life, but absolutely no passengers under two – although older kids would almost certainly love it, as the inside is at the same pressure as the surface so there’s no ear popping. It’s also fine for pregnant women for the same reason.
Lastly, at some point, I will take the ferry to Fuerteventura to enjoy the unspoiled beaches there – and at Playa Papagayo, very near to where I was staying. Wild dunes may be gorgeous but not the ideal environment for a young baby.
