Family hotels in London sleeping five

Given how much choice there is of hotels in London with kids, it’s a bit of a surprise to discover how those options shrink if you’re looking for family hotels in London sleeping five.

But it’s far from impossible to find somewhere for larger families, even if you’re travelling on a budget – and it goes without saying that there are lots of gorgeous spacious suites in the capital’s five-star hotels if you’re looking to splurge.

You’re not restricted to self-catering accommodation either, although aparthotels are a great alternative to family hotels in London for 5 as well. Here’s my pick of the best.

Family hotels in London sleeping five

If you’re travelling with a baby or toddler, and are happy to sleep in one room for the night, you’ll find even more flexibility – often family rooms in London hotels which sleep four will have an option to add a travel cot as well. Always confirm directly though.

Travelodge family rooms have space for five if it’s two adults, two children under 16 and 1 baby in a cot, and there are dozens of hotels across central and greater London – once your baby is out of a travel cot, it’s no longer an option unfortunately.

Premier Inn family rooms have a similar rule, with space for two pull-out or sofa beds for kids, as well as a travel cot.

But if you’re looking for family hotels in London for 5 once your littlest is out of a cot, there are still options to be found.

If you’re travelling with teens, bear in mind that you may want more privacy – and a second bathroom! – so while connecting rooms aren’t a cheap option, they might make for a more fun holiday.

Hilton Metropole, Edgware Road

If you’re looking for somewhere central and spacious that won’t break the bank, it’s hard to beat the Hilton Metropole.

Located not far from Edgware Road underground stations, and walking distance to Marble Arch, the hotel’s biggest rooms will sleep five. The two queen bed superior room with sofa bed sleeps two adults and up to three children.

There are options available including breakfast, while if you plan ahead, the Advance Purchase booking rates can be around £450 plus occasional deals outside peaks times.

Doubletree by Hilton London Docklands Riverside

Hilton’s Doubletree brand is another great option if you need a family hotel in London sleeping five, with a some spacious options at the Docklands Riverside in Rotherhithe.

The two bedroom Queen room has two separate bedrooms and sleeps up to three kids as well as two adults – plus, as they’re in a separate room, it’s ideal if you’ve got younger kids as you don’t need to sit in the dark trying not to wake them. Or the two Double Family Deluxe sleeps five in one room for a cheaper option.

Housed in a 17th century building, once home to London’s last dry shipbuilding dock, there are some fantastic views out onto the river – plus you get the usual warm DoubleTree cookie when you check in. Always a bonus with kids.

The hotel is further out of the centre, however there’s a free ferry to Canary Wharf, where you can then catch the Uber boat or the tube, plus there are several tube and overground stations a bus ride (or 20-minute walk) away. You can find rates from under £200 per night.

If you’re not staying on a budget, hotels like the Canopy by Hilton London City have family connecting rooms

Zedwell Piccadilly

The Cocoon rooms at Zedwell Piccadilly don’t just sleep five, there’s room for six, eight and even 12, which is a real rarity in London – let alone central London.

But it’s definitely a bit of a Marmite option: you’ll either love this set up with its location a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Circus or won’t be able to stand the thought of a room with no windows or natural light.

There are noise-reducing walls though if you’re worried about being right among the noise and bustle, especially if you’re visiting London with younger kids, although realistically this is likely to work best as a place to sleep if you’re visiting with tweens and teens (just be aware there’s limited privacy).

The emphasis is on minimalist style too. The beds themselves are comfy and you get three double beds in the Cocoon 6 (four in the Cocoon 8), set up in a bunk bed style arrangement, all with Egyptian cotton sheets.

And you’ll find swanky Malin & Goetz toiletries in the bathroom, along with the walk-in rain shower (separated by a glass door), plus lots of plugs by the beds but no extras like a TV or tea/coffee-making facilities, or even a table/chairs.

Prices for rooms sleeping six are often under £200 outside peak times, including free cancellation (but no breakfast).

A view across the Thames to the Elizabeth Tower containing Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster - bigger families can still find hotel rooms in London sleeping five close to the centre of the city

Park Plaza hotels

The Park Plaza hotels have some of the best locations in London, including properties on Westminster Bridge with a view of Big Ben, and Victoria which have two-bedroom apartments suitable for a family of five.

The two-bed apartments sleep up to four adults and two kids, in fact, so it’s a great option if you’re visiting London with teens who need more than a roll-out bed (and want a bit of privacy). Rates cost from around £550 for the Victoria property.

The Westminster Bridge hotel apartments also work for a family of five and have options with a terrace or balcony. Rates if you book directly are higher at around £850 per night here but you can often find discounts on booking.com.

Clarendon hotel, Greenwich

A little further out of the centre, the Clarendon hotel near Greenwich is great if you’re planning to spend your time around Greenwich and the O2 or are looking for a hotel room sleeping five in London that won’t cost a fortune.

The family suite has a double and three single beds, with rates from around £230 including breakfast – there’s also a lovely garden area for kids to play in, plus you can have afternoon tea there when the weather is kind.

It’s around 15 minutes walk from the Royal Observatory, across Blackheath and Greenwich Park, or 30 minutes to the Cutty Sark. Blackheath station is only a five-minute walk away with trains to London Bridge taking around 15 minutes.

Family hotels in London sleeping five on a budget

While most hotels in this post are at the affordable end (allowing for London prices!), if you’re looking to keep rates under £200 per night, I’ve picked some budget-friendly options for bigger families.

If you’re looking to stay somewhere relatively central, you’ll need to sacrifice some of the frills and little extras but there is still accommodation to suit different ages and travel styles. Don’t rule out the idea of connecting rooms too – scroll down for more

Avon hotel, Paddington

If you’re looking for hotel rooms sleeping five in London, the Paddington area is one of the best to try with options including the Avon hotel.

The family rooms include breakfast, which is unusual, and while the rooms might look a bit dated, this two-star hotel is clean and has all the essentials, while the friendly staff help set it apart from the competition.

There’s no lift and its location on Norfolk Square, very close to the station, means you could be disturbed by the noise of tube trains – a higher room can be quieter, although the trade-off is more stairs…

With double bed and three singles in the room, there are also options to book with free cancellation for around £200.

The Dolphin Hotel, Paddington

Not far from the Avon hotel, The Dolphin hotel in Paddington also has family rooms sleeping five – either five single beds, or three singles and a bunk bed.

The three-star hotel on Norfolk Square is very close to Paddington station – keep an eye out for the statue of Paddington Bear in the square, although the downside is that you may hear the rumbling of trains here too, especially if you’re a light sleeper.

Book in advance and you can find family rooms for around £200, although as with most three-star hotels, don’t expect too much in terms of frills and extras. Breakfast is available for an added fee but you’ll also find a string of options at the station and nearby.

Royal Eagle Hotel, Paddington

The Royal Eagle Hotel.is another option to consider in the Paddington area, only a couple of minutes’ walk to the station, so it’s very central.

The family rooms here have a double bed and three singles (or the option to make it two doubles and a single), with three of the beds on a mezzanine area.

It’s a three-star hotel, so don’t expect too much in the way of luxuries and mod cons, but if you book a non-refundable stay in advance, you can find prices close to £200 per night. There are options with free cancellation, as well as including breakfast.

For more options in the Paddington area, the Athena Hotel is similar to its neighbours with family rooms sleeping five costing around £160 if booked in advance

YHA Youth Hostels

When thinking about where to stay in London with kids, you might not immediately think of a youth hostel – but with several locations around the city and private rooms sleeping five, they’re a great option.

Understandably popular with families looking for budget accommodation in London, it’s well worth booking in advance, especially for holiday periods.

You’ll find private en-suite rooms for up to six at YHA London Central, between Regent’s Park and Oxford Circus, with rates from as little as £95 per night.

Or the YHA Earls Court is another great budget option for families as it’s close to the museums in South Kensington but still within zone 1 on the tube, with private rooms for six costing less than £100 (or a little more for similar rooms with en-suite facilities).

To keep the costs of your trip down, the YHA properties also have a laundry room, self-catering kitchen and communal areas where you can meet other families. There’s also a large garden for kids to enjoy during the summer months.
