National Trust 50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾

Every time I come across the National Trust – from their school holiday activities to our visits to Osterley House – I’m reminded of their clever list of 50 things to do before you’re 11 3/4.

Girl and boy stooping to pick flowers in a field - embracing the nostalgia with good old-fashioned ideas for fun in the National Trust 50 things to do before you're 11 /34 list

I’ve always thought this was a fantastic idea for inspiring parents and kids, since I first heard about it before Minnie was born. But until this week, I haven’t actually thought about starting to work through the list with her. And while there are certainly quite a few activities that she’s too young for (though she’s got a good decade left to tick the boxes), she’s actually managed two already.

No 42: go swimming in the sea (albeit with a bit of help, she’s started in style in the Caribbean) and no 6: run around in the rain. Because we haven’t been short of that and she never says no to the chance to wear wellies.

If she hadn’t been napping, she could have completed no 32 as well – discover what’s in a pond – on our visit to the London Wetland Centre.

So what next? Perhaps no 23, visit a farm – a city farm, at least. And I’m sure if I get stuck for more ideas, I’ll find plenty of inspiration in future.

For more ideas of National Trust places to visit, we’ve been steadily working our way around the country over the past few years and through that list of things to do – including quite a few attempts at den building:
