The top ice cream in Granada (and churros)

It’s not long until the hour goes forward – boo to less sleep, but hurrah for lighter evenings. And I can already feel myself switching to spring operating. That means jackets and my large collection of Breton tops instead of thick coats, boots and jumpers. It means white wine instead of red. I even got a craving for ice-cream in the sunshine earlier today.

So in one of those happy coincidences, as I was researching things to do in Granada, I stumbled across one the city’s top places for el helado as I started to make my list of several tempting ice cream hotspots in the city – Los Italianos on the Gran Via de Colon.

It’s already got me dreaming of watching the world go by with a scoop or two.

One of the few cities in Spain where you can – supposedly – still find the snacks thrown in for free with a drink, as they were originally served, I’m a big fan of anywhere which can use every part of the pig except the oink!

And then there are the churros as well. It’s a Spanish classic, but who doesn’t like chocolate for breakfast on holiday? Besides when you’re about to spend the day exploring the palaces of the Alhambra, you need a good breakfast to fuel all that walking.

Frankly, any excuse to have chocolate and churros works for me.

There’s no shortage of places in Granada but the classic stop that everyone recommends is the Gran Cafe on Plaza Bib-Rambla – dating back to 1907, it’s also the city’s oldest. So you’re pretty well sightseeing as the same time.

As a bonus, the cafe is one of the few places open bright and early too. Chocolate thick enough to stand a spoon in (nearly), fresh churros and as many Spanish voices as tourists poring over guidebooks.

All for the grand total of €5.90 for two. Yum.
