Travel activities for geography homeschool
Since my daughter was a baby, she’s had travel-themed activities to entertain her – map decorations in the nursery, a magnetic and scratch off map to play with now, a sticker atlas, a globe beachball… I could go on.

And while we’ve been in lockdown, I’ve been enjoying adding some more homeschool geography lessons to her temporary timetable – and learning a few things myself. How had I never realised what a cool flag Northern Macedonia has?
So it’s been a huge bonus discovering The Worldly Adventures of Archibold Clutterbuck website with its mix of fantastic free activity packs to download, as well as other travel extras to buy, including a glossy A2 7 continents map and 52-page travel journal. Even better, I’ve got a set to give away.
Themed on the seven continents of the world, each free activity pack has quizzes, plus information on animals, maps and cities, and a chance to do some word searches and colouring as well.

There’s information on the website to help answer the questions, along with more online quizzes to test your own knowledge. And it’s a proper test: I wasn’t completely sure of a couple of answers for the Antarctica quiz myself.
Although we were both fairly certain emperor penguins don’t head back to the icy wastes for a big party (love that image though).
We started with the Europe pack as the basis for one of our homeschool geography lessons, which included drawing a long-eared bat, discovering what wolverines eat (answer: pretty much anything they’d like to), learning more about European capitals and making a start on colouring in St Basil’s cathedral in Moscow.
There are also helpful links and videos online, as well as more to learn about each continent, not to mention extra travel activities including your own map to colour and crosswords.
All perfect for kids around my seven-year-old’s age – easy enough for younger ones to start learning and keep them engaged, but still enough depth to test older ones too.
After all, do you know what year Antarctica was discovered or how many languages are spoken in Africa? Me neither.
The complete set includes the newest release covering North America, as well as Africa, Asia, Oceania, South America and Antarctica, which should keep us going nicely for a bit.
To be honest, it feels like we’ve only just scratched the surface of all the free information on the site (plus more quirky facts on Instagram): quite apart from being a great resource for homeschool geography, I am also feeling distinctly pleased that my lesson planning has been done for me.
Then there are the extras to buy in the shop as well, including a flags of the world poster, the journal and maps.
Our 7 continents version also has a handy set of facts for each continent, such as highest and lowest point, as well as largest and smallest countries, number of countries and more to refer to.
It’s not purely information about the countries of the world though: you can also find more activity packs about endangered animals, indigenous people, the environment, oceans… the explorer travel journal even has boxes to fill in for interesting instruments you find around the world and different foods you’ve tried.
We might not be able to plan a real-life holiday to fill all those in for now, but there’s no reason we can’t travel – and learn about the world – from the comfort of our own sofas!
