Rain, rain go away

Posted by mummytravels

Considering it’s been the wettest summer in living memory/since records began (a LONG time anyway), I haven’t done too badly. I may not have got the long lazy days in the back garden that I’d hoped for at the end of my pregnancy but I have managed a few sunny outings with Minnie and been able to cower indoors the rest of the time. Until today.

Our usual baby clinics weren’t running this week for various reasons so we headed to the only other realistic option to get her weighed this afternoon. It looked slightly grey and foreboding but thankfully I’d had the sense to stash the rain cover and my umbrella under the buggy. Inevitably, about two minutes after setting out, the heavens opened. I rushed to get the cover over Minnie before she got soaked – thankfully like the rest of the Bugaboo Bee, it’s fairly intuitive, even if I’m fairly sure I’m getting it slightly wrong each time. She was dry and snuggled up at least (it is wrong to be jealous of your own daughter, right?).

By this point, I was nicely damp, and as several spokes on my umbrella chose that moment to break completely, I soon upgraded to drenched. The traffic warden who cheerily asked, ‘All right?’ as he wondered past got a less cheery growl of no. Luckily the Bee is also light enough to steer with one hand while grappling with a brolly, and still leave enough energy to mutter curses under your breath. Meanwhile Minnie drifted happily off to sleep – presumably it’s the baby equivalent of being tucked up in bed listening to the rain blatter on the windows.

We survived, albeit rather squelchily in my case, but it’s confirmed several things for me. I hate the rain even more now I have to worry about her getting wet (although presumably I’ll be less anxious about the dire consequences of raindrops hitting her in a few months); I really want an Indian summer/long block of sun somewhere; and it’s time to buy the new umbrella I’ve been eyeing up…

  1. This weather is so rubbish – when I pictured maternity leave it mainly involved being sat in a park with the baby for the whole summer. We also have the Bugaboo Bee, I feel exactly the same about the rain cover – I always end up tucking it in somewhere, I’m never sure it’s on right. Love the pram though!

  2. Exactly! Am still keeping my fingers crossed for an Indian summer. Glad I’m not the only one wrestling with the rain cover for the Bee although it keeps the water out which is the main thing – otherwise it is a great buggy.
